The zoo has a great Calendar of Events--up next, Boo in the Zoo.

Cheap & Cheerful Time Travel-Angelino Heights
Los Angeles is notorious for tearing down anything older than 50 years. (A personal concern since I was born in 1960)
But Carroll Avenue in Angelino Heights (east of Echo Park and south of Dodger Stadium) is proof that if we keep our hands to ourselves, we can preserve something amazing. Lined with Victorian manors, Carroll Avenue gives a rare glimpse of what life for the prosperous was like in the 1800s. A trip back to the elegance of Old California.
To view some of the homes on Carroll Avenue visit

A walking tour of the area is conducted the first Saturday of the month by the Los Angeles Conservancy. Cost is $10.00 per person. Reservations are required as the group is usually invited into one of the homes.

Cheap & Cheerful Jazz - Hollywood
Right in the center of the action, Catalina Jazz Club (6725 West Sunset Blvd.) offers a cool alternative to the wild scene of Hollywood. Presenting "Nothing but the best in Jazz," tickets can run as high as $45.00, however 10.00 tickets can also be had. It's about planning ahead and optiing for weekday nights rather than the weekend.
A veritable Who's Who of jazz legends such as Dizzie Gillespie, Art Blakey, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Ray Brown, Joe Williams, Max Roach, Carmen McRae, Joe Henderson, Benny Carter, Wynton and Branford Marsalis have all performed at the Catalina.
Valet parking is $6.00 -- a value as many Hollywood lots charge $10.00 to self park.
