Cheap & Cheerful Cinco de Mayo-Downtown
Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) is a big deal in LA. But let's be clear, Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day -that's September 16. May 5th commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862, a big deal because it was the last foreign invasion attempted and thwarted in Mexico. If you are going to celebrate something, know what you are celebrating.
Cinco De Mayo parties started last weekend and virtually every bar in Los Angeles will have something going on tomorrow night. But really, the party worth waiting for for is Fiesta Broadway this Sunday May 8.
With a mile of Los Angeles city streets closed for this free event, and half a million people expected, the organizers of Fiesta Broadway having bragging rights as the world’s largest Cinco de Mayo festival. I mean this party is BIG. Broadway will be closed from 5th to Temple, Spring Street will be closed from Temple to 2nd and 2nd, 3rd and 4th will be closed between Spring and Hill.
Two words: Public transportation!
Musical acts begin at 11:20 on two different stages, located on either ends of Broadway. There are also mini stages and about 100 exhibitors on hand, as well as plenty of food stalls (but no alcohol). So make a day of it as the fun runs til 6pm.
