All you need is a yoga mat (or a large beach towel you can fold) and either a fist full of quarters or your debit card for metered parking.

Cheap & Cheerful Fringe Festival - Hollywood

Hate when I miss the starting date of something great--glad that there is still time to get the word out.

Hollywood Fringe Festival (June 16-26)is a celebration of the emerging arts and creative energy. Inspired by the long-running (50 years and counting....) Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the HFF gives voice to many new talents at prices most of us can afford.

Admission averages between $10.00 - 15.00. Parking varies from location to location, but metered parking is readily available throughout Hollywood.

So visit the complete guide and check it out!

Cheap & Cheerful Bicycle Race - Manhattan Beach

Chances are, few of us will get to the Tour de France any time soon, but in the meantime why not check out the Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix?

The races start at 7:00am from Live Oak Park(1601 North Valley Drive) and continue through 2:00pm. This is a big deal, not just some local event. The course considered one of the more "technical" on the USA Cycling National Race Calendar. The MBGP draws more than 1,000 racers and 7,500 spectators.

In addition to the races, there is an antique bike show, food vendors and exhibitors offering bike accessories, clothing and "various nutritionals." (if you go, let me know what they mean...I'm thinking high end power bars, but I could be wrong)

The event is free, but Manhattan Beach is a kingdom of metered parking with serious enforcement, especially on a weekend. So bring a lot of quarters or your debit card, some sunscreen and have a great day!

Cheap & Cheerful Ocean Festival - Santa Monica

Whether you are an Angeleno or a tourist, you have to check out the Santa Monica Pier Paddleboard Race and Ocean Festival.(200 Santa Monica Pier)

For the uninitiated, paddleboarding is a water sport whereby you propel yourself through the water on a long board with a swimming motion or stand on the board using a paddle. Either way, competitors have to be in pretty great shape.

The standup paddle and traditional or prone paddleboard races feature a 5.5 mile long course and 2 mile "fun paddle," both will take paddlers around historic Santa Monica Pier.

And then there are the Dory races. A dory is a small flat-bottomed rowboat with a high bow and stern, of a kind originally used for fishing, but in this case are manned but area lifeguards who go full steam for bragging rights.

In between races, you can check out the board and gear expo, live music, the pier's aquarium or Pacific Park the on pier amusement park.

The action runs from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00pm and benefits the good works of Heal the Bay.
Admission is free. Parking can run from $8-$15 dollars on the weekend. The early bird gets the cheaper spot!
