Cheap & Cheerful Frank Lloyd Wright- Hollyhock House and Barnsdall Park

Imagine that--something that was built in 1921 still stands in Los Angeles!

Heaven on earth for the Frank Lloyd Wright fan and an incredible introduction for those unfamiliar with his work, Hollyhock House and the surrounding Barnsdall Park (4800 Hollywood Boulevard) was Mr. Wright's first structure in California.

Aline Barnsdall was an oil heiress who was emersed in the cultural life of the time. Situated on a 36 acre site the original plans included a home for Barnsdall and her young daughter, two additional residences, a theater, a directors house, dormitory of actors, studio for artists, shops and a motion picture theater. However only the 2 secondary residences and the the Barnsdall home, Hollyhock House were built.

The house's name comes from Aline Barnsdall's favorite flower. Hollyhocks were incorporated as a decorative element throughout the house.
